What is the Mindfully Resilient Project?
Mindfully Resilient began as a Regional Access Project (RAP) grant awarded to 5 agencies to create and pilot a high school mental health curriculum. The agencies (OneFuture Coachella Valley/Behavioral Health Alignment Team, JFS of the Desert, Operation SafeHouse, Indio High School, and Coachella Valley High School) collected source materials and ultimately programs were piloted by Jason Tate from the Indio High School Health and Nutritional Sciences Academy, Jodie Capper from the Coachella Valley High School Health Academy, and Stacy Ward from the Desert Hot Springs High School ACE Academy during the 2018-19 school year.
We have created editable PowerPoints based on their lessons and these are posted below.
The Mindfully Resilient PowerPoints are divided into 9 topics:
- Introduction to Adolescent Emotions
- Healthy and Unhealthy Relationships
- Anger Management
- Anxiety and Panic Attacks
- Depression and Suicide
- Using the SafeHouse App
- Substance Abuse
- Educational Paths to Behavioral Health Jobs
Why We Want Every Educator to Have This Material in Their Hands
Basic mental health, relationships, and emotional regulation knowledge is critical to developing teens if they are to negotiate this increasingly stressful world. Suicidal behavior, depression, anxiety, and bullying continue at alarming rates among our teens. Unfortunately, mental health information is not regularly provided in high school curricula.
We believe that teachers and counselors with their innovative ideas and focused mentoring are just the people to begin getting this information out to students. Regardless of your professional focus, emotional self-care and emotional regulation will be necessary for your students to succeed in future careers and relationships.
In both the IHS and CVHS cohorts, students showed that they were experiencing extremely high levels of stress and did not have sufficient self-calming skills. When addressing depression, anxiety, suicide, and relationships as academic content, students revealed lack of basic coping and emotional self-regulation skills. The need for this information was validated immediately.
Over 300 youth have already received lessons based on these materials. If an amplifier of 2.5 is used for friends and families, a total of 750 people were impacted in a positive way by the Mindfully Resilient information!

I had to check whether I was being a good friend in my relationships and whether my friends were being ones too… After the lesson, I checked in with my friends and made sure I never said anything to offend them or hurt them, and I apologized if I ever did.” IHS Student

- “I’ve learned the power of talking to someone I trust when I need help. I used to hold all of my emotions in and I would get overwhelmed and then I couldn't do anything. - “When thinking about learning Psychology, I get intrigued. The topics from psychology have always been interesting to me, from the history to the experiments. It fascinates me to learn about behaviors and getting more in depth about the mind, being in this psychology class… it has even inspired me to figure out my career path, which most definitely will have to do with something related to this subject.” CVHS Student

Below you will find 9 editable PowerPoints on each mental health topic as derived from the source materials. The original resources that were used in the Mindfully Resilient pilot are available upon request to JFS.
You can incorporate these files into your program curricula in any order you wish or focus on the ones you find most relevant. Simply:
- Download the PowerPoint presentation slides onto your desktop
- Edit them in order to fit the needs of your lesson plan.
- Request original source materials from JFS if you want further info.
